The term “turkey neck” refers to someone who has loose wrinkled, flabby skin around the neck which tends to wobble when they move, similar to a real turkey when they move. The cause of turkey neck is aging and excessive sun exposure. As we age, your neck muscles begin to weaken and your skin around your neck starts to lose its elasticity. When this happens, the skin loses it’s ability to stay tight and smooth. Turkey neck also tends to be genetic, so if your parents have it, there is a good chance you may develop it too.
If you are suffering from turkey neck, fortunately there are a few solutions, invasive and non-invasive.
The right option will depend on the severity of your condition, your age, and your skin type.
An invasive treatment for removing the lose skin around your neck is cosmetic plastic surgery. A facelift is a procedure whereby weak facial and neck muscles are lifted and excess skin is surgically removed. During the procedure, a plastic surgeon will an incision behind the ears so that the scars are hidden. Another incision may be made below the chin if needed.
A facelift requires general anesthesia and the operation takes about two hours. Post treatment there will be bruising and swelling for the first week. You should be able to return back to work in about two weeks. A traditional facelift can normally last 7 to 10 years, but there are some newer techniques which supports the deep ligaments of the face that may last up to 20 years.
A fat tranfer is another cosmetic procedure whereby fat from one part of the body is transferred to the neck area. This procedure is also called “plumping”. The fat cells that are harvested from other parts of the body are injected into the neck areas that require plumping.
Facelift and fat transfer are sometimes done together. With any invasive surgery, there are complications and risks involved. A certified plastic surgeon should be the only ones doing these procedures.
RF Microneeding or radiofrequency microneedling is a non-invasive procedure that can tighten skin. The radiowave energy combined with microneedling triggers collagen production that is superior to just microneedling alone. The treatment can firm, strengthen, and recontour the skin tissue, and reduces any excess chin fat. Over a period of several months, your skin starts to remodel with strong new strands of elastin and collagen. Your turkey neck will gradually look tighter, toner, and firmer.

If you already have lose skin around your neck, you need to have a combination of healthy weight loss, exercise, and healthy diet to help tighten the skin. Rapid weight loss is unhealthy and can create more lose skin around your neck.
Botox is a temporary fix for turkey neck. About 40 injections of Botox is required around the neck and lower jaw to help with tightnening the skin around the neck. Botox injections can temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. However wrinkles caused by gravity or sun damage don’t respond well to Botox treatments. Results are usually seen within 5 to 7 days after Botox injections.
We recommend using the Potenza RF Microneedling in combination with the Picosure laser to enhance your skin without surgery. The combined treatment can tighten, tone, and remove fine lines and wrinkles.
