Why is it challenging to remove a tattoo?

Tattoo ink is injected beneath the skin into the dermis (the thick layer of living tissue beneath the epidermis), which is more difficult to reach. The larger the size of the ink particle, the more difficult it is to remove. Traditional laser treatments break up ink particles to make them easier for the body to eliminate. However, ink particles may still be too large for the body to eliminate after multiple treatments. Reds and yellows, for example, are more difficult to remove than blues and blacks. Traditional lasers have a harder time treating darker skin tones because more energy is absorbed into the skin rather than the ink particles. How does Pico laser tattoo removal treatment work?

Pico (one trillionth of a second) pulse durations are used to generate super-high powered laser energy, which is focused directly on the ink of your tattoo. This strong photo-mechanical impact optimizes tattoo ink fracturing, which means your unwanted tattoos will be zapped into vapour.

What should I expect?

Multiple treatment sessions are necessary for laser tattoo removal. The number of treatments required will vary depending on the type of ink used, the colour utilized, the quality and depth of the tattoo’s application, and the interval between treatments. The tattoos made of graphite and Indian ink are the most easily removed with laser treatments. Professional tattoos often need 5-8 sessions, while amateur tattoos typically need 1-3 sessions, all spaced around six weeks apart. Green, aqua, and yellow are challenging hues. The colours that are easier to remove are red and black. With laser tattoo removal, better than 95% fading of the tattoo is typically possible.

When can you expect to see results?

Your tattoos can be erased in a single session, but three to six sessions are often needed for full removal. Although it is impossible to remove a tattoo completely, the Pico Laser can greatly reduce its visibility. You can tattoo there again if the area has fully and, as expected, healed without experiencing any negative effects from the last tattoo.

Is tattoo removal using a laser painful?

Although your perception of pain may differ from that of other patients, be assured that very little discomfort is experienced throughout the removal procedure. Applying a topical anesthetic 30–60 minutes before the treatment session can relieve patients with sensitive skin or those who believe they could feel uncomfortable. With this technique, your skin can be continuously monitored from the start of your treatment through the final Pico, allowing for a cool, comfortable skin temperature.

Efficacy and risks

Less than 5% of people will develop scars, typically only affecting a fraction of the treated region. Red ink is typically the culprit for local and systemic allergic reactions to the ink. Changes to the colour and skin’s texture are two common side effects of laser tattoo removal utilizing a Q-switched laser. Topical bleaching creams are an effective treatment for minor, temporary hyperpigmentation. Hypopigmentation is also typically a temporary condition, but de-pigmentation happens approximately 1% of the time and is frequently permanent. Skin discomfort could persist for a week or more.
