What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling is a technique that involves inserting several tiny needles into the top layer of your skin. It helps rejuvenate your skin by eliminating wrinkles, scars, and fine lines and stimulating collagen production, making it vibrant and youthful.
The goal of microneedling
When we microneedle, we are looking for two effects. These are the effects:
- To create tiny channels via which skin-care products may readily infiltrate the skin. More potent outcomes are obtained via easier penetration and deeper absorption.
- To stimulate the skin’s natural healing ability. When the skin is wounded, it begins to produce new collagen. The skin is revitalized by new collagen.
- Some persons also use Microneedling to increase hair growth.
Specific areas of microneedling
It is used on the face to treat age spots, scars, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. It also targets stretch mark-prone regions by improving skin suppleness.
Immediately after the first treatment
In most circumstances, you will not notice any differences after the first treatment. Some folks, though, may experience change practically quickly.
Jennifer*, our tested case, observed that her skin-care products were absorbed more quickly. She also noted that her normally dry skin felt softer. In her own words, she felt like her skin was shining.
Following the second treatment
Her radiance did not last long after the initial treatment, as planned, but her skin stayed smoother.
She concentrated her second treatment on puffy regions beneath her eyes. In the days that followed, she noticed her skin becoming tighter.
Following the third treatment
She noted that her skin remained smooth and radiant for a long time after the treatment.
Before and after microneedling outcomes
The therapies were administered regularly rather than daily as was necessary. Despite only being used on occasion, the outcomes were excellent.
The outcomes would have been significantly greater if used regularly.
Microneedling in the clinic
Because of the steps involved, microneedling in the clinic is now more difficult. These are as follows:
- Pre-treatment assistance
- Treatment on the day
- After-treatment care
You’ll first need to prepare your skin for the process before proceeding.
Instructions for microneedling pre-treatment
Microneedling success is dependent on pre-treatments.
Preparation might begin six months in advance, particularly for in-office therapy.
The first rule of microneedling is to stay away from using Accutane. Accutane is a common acne treatment medication that is often prescribed for free. It is recommended to discontinue all medication six months or more before beginning your microneedling treatment.
Avoid laser operations or direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before microneedling.
At least one week before microneedling, avoid the following:
- Anything that promotes skin sensitivity, such as exfoliation masks, salicylic acid-containing skin care products, and retinoids.
- Acidic or hydroquinone-containing skin care treatments that dry out or irritate the skin.
- Waxing or the use of depilatory creams
- Aspirin and other blood-thinning drugs
- If you are using anti-inflammatory medications, discontinue them at least three days before microneedling. These medicines disrupt the body’s standard inflammatory mechanism. They also have an impact on the predicted outcomes of microneedling.
- Avoid shaving on the day of the treatment to avoid skin irritation.
- Maintain a balanced diet for 4-6 weeks before and after the microneedling procedure for the best outcomes.
Treatment day
Follow these instructions on the day of treatment.
- Avoid using makeup or skin lotion before microneedling. Maintain clean skin and clean your face in the clinic if feasible.
- Inform your doctor about any modifications you made that may impact microneedling.
- Forty-five minutes before the surgery, your doctor will administer topical anesthetics to your face.
- Inform your doctor about any face tattoos you may have.
- Patients may attempt microneedling with PRP in certain instances (plasma-rich proteins). Your doctor will collect blood from you to get the PRP. In certain rare instances, you may be able to get plasma from a donor.
After-treatment care
As with at-home microneedling, your doctor will apply a hyaluronic mask and moisturizer immediately after the treatment.
You need to follow the instructions below after your treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure for extended periods. When out in the sun, always remember to apply sunscreen.
- Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen should be avoided.
- Keep ice away from your face.
- In the event of discomfort, which is uncommon, take simply Tylenol or paracetamol.
- Maintain a nutritious diet for the best outcomes. As much as possible, avoid wheat, sugar, and dairy. Collagen supplements may help you produce more collagen. Consume more acidic fruits such as pineapples, oranges, and cherries.

What to expect after microneedling treatment: the healing process
You may experience discomfort immediately after the treatment, such as a tingling feeling on your face. To alleviate the pain, your doctor will administer a calming lotion. However, some individuals get through the surgery without any discomfort.
These are anticipated to occur in the days ahead.
Day 1 to 3
What can be expected
- To begin, your skin will have a sunburn-like effect, which is typical.
- When touched, it will feel dry, tight, and sensitive. You will also experience skin redness after microneedling.
- Bruising is prevalent in individuals who undergo microneedling with the PRP option. It often lasts 5-7 days. After PRP injections, patients may suffer edema lasting four days or less. It is also crucial to know that PRP injections aid in healing. PRP also includes growth factors and cytokines, which improve microneedling outcomes.
Instructions for after-treatment
- During the post-treatment time, be gentle with your skin.
- Wash your face with a light cleanser and cold water. To avoid damage, pat your face dry rather than rubbing it.
- During this time, avoid vigorous activity that can cause your skin pores to open.
- Additionally, sleep on your back with your head slightly raised. To decrease discomfort or swelling, a suitable sleeping posture is required.
Day 3-5
What can be expected
You will see your skin peeling off throughout this time. No matter how tempting it is, do not peel off your skin.
Instructions for after-treatment
Allow your skin to peel naturally. You can remove the extra flaky skin but not the peeling. Flaking is caused by an abundance of young skin cells replacing old ones.
During this time, moisturize your skin often.
Day 5-7
What can be expected
Your skin will have changed between days 1 and 5. There will be little visible change; new skin cells will replace old ones regularly.
Instructions for after-treatment
- You may continue your usual skin-care regimen after treatment, but only if your skin is no longer inflamed.
- You may resume utilizing products containing retinol or derivatives of it.
